Our unique Constrained Forward Stratigraphy Modeling (C-FSM) method improves the geological and engineering aspects of the model while simplifying the user workflow and significantly reducing modeling time.
Today, subsurface modeling is often too optimistic, too complex, and takes too much time. Geology is the most critical element of the model, and it needs to be better represented. The current workflow underestimates lateral and vertical heterogeneity and thin shale barriers, overestimating overall permeability.
Improving the geological and simulation model and process will enhance our ability to forecast and make better decisions as we focus on new subsurface usages (geothermal energy or subsurface CO2 storage) with low margins of error.
Our new method is a forward stratigraphic modeling method (FSM) uniquely constrained by wells and seismic data. The depositional environment-based algorithms forward model stratigraphic features while honoring lithofacies interpretation and seismic information.
1️⃣ The method’s first benefit is more lateral and vertical variation of facies distribution away from the wells while providing granulometry trend information to simulate other petrophysical properties.
2️⃣The second benefit is explicitly modeling thin shale flow barriers in the geological and flow model while respecting flow simulator requirements on grid geometry.
Unlike other process-based methods, few parameters are required, and computation is lightweight.
